REGISTERING LOCKSMITH AND THE 7.0 PLUS UTILITIES
================================================
LockSmith is not free. Sites using this software in business MUST
register it. Contact the author for site licensing information. If it is for
personal use only, please send a few dollars. Or you can consider the
following.
7.0 PLUS Utilities is a package of all (more than 25) System 7.0 utilities
I have written. You can get the disk with all of them NOW (not wait until
I decide to upload the next program) by sending $29.95 to me. This will
register you for all the software, will get you a disk of the software, and
an update to the PLUS Utilities when it rolls around. It’s a pretty good
deal. You should register your software, anyway, so why not do it
like this? And it’s a lot cheaper this way.
See the documentation which should accompany this file for
more information on the 7.0 PLUS Utilities. A registration form should
also accompany this file. Please use it to register the software.
USING LOCKSMITH
================
• If you use LockSmith, please please please send me a note. My addresses
(post and e-mail) are given below in “About the Author”. Also, read the
information in the above section on registration.
What Does LockSmith Do?
-----------------------
• LockSmith allows you to lock or unlock files, folders, and disks quickly
and easily without the trouble of the Finder's Get Info windows. Locked
files and disks cannot be modified until they are unlocked. No locked
item can be renamed or deleted until it is unlocked. When used under
System 7.0 or higher in Drop Box mode, you can modify entire groups of
items.
Using LockSmith
---------------
• LockSmith can be used in two ways:
• You can double-click on the application icon to open the program and
use the Open... menu item in the File menu to select files for
modification. You can also modify your preferences from this menu.
You could also drag sets of files, folders, or disks into the application,
“Drop Box-style”. Depending on the preferences you have set up (see the
next section), LockSmith will scan folders and disks provided, and will
modify ALL files and ALL of the directories provided, no matter what
their depth. The latter, “Drop Box” method requires Apple Events, and
thus System 7.0 or higher. So if you don’t have at least System 7.0, you’ll
have to use the Open... menu item. Disks are treated as directories, so if you
drag a disk over a LockSmith with preferences to modify only directories
and not their contents, the disk will be locked, but no other items on the
disk will be modified.
• When in Manual mode (using the Open... menu item), the file open dialog
will appear with several extra buttons. The Locked check box is checked
if the currently selected file, folder, or disk is locked. You can
check or uncheck this button as desired. The other two check boxes
determine what files to display. Remember that folders are always
displayed (regardless of their visibility). The last two extra buttons,
All locked and All unlocked, allow you to make all files in the current
directory either locked or unlocked. LockSmith does not go any deeper
than the current directory when in Manual mode, so the contents of
a folder locked in Manual mode are not locked also.
• Double-clicking on files in Manual mode is the same as toggling the
Locked check box. Otherwise (double-clicking on folders or disks),
it performs the standard function.
• If you lock or unlock an alias in Drop Box mode, the owner file will be
locked or unlocked accordingly (not the alias).
• Hold down the shift key while the program is launching (or right after
pressing OK in the Preferences dialog if you are holding the option key
down to display it) to toggle the locked bit of selected items. If the item
is not currently locked, LockSmith will lock it, and it will unlock items
that currently have their locked flags set.
• As a safeguard, disk locked flags are processed last. So if you wish to
modify files on a locked disk, you must first unlock the disk. This only
involves dragging the disk into the drop box twice. For example, if you
want all files unlocked on a software-locked disk, you must first unlock
the disk with LockSmith (drag it over the icon or use the Open... menu
item), then drag it over the icon again to set the flags on the files on
the disk.
• Alerts are very annoying, especially in Drop Boxes. So there aren’t any. As
a rule of thumb... If something doesn’t unlock, check the disk. It is probably
locked.
• To cancel processing, just type a command-period. Files already
processed will remain modified.
Preferences
-----------
• The first time you try to modify a file using the program, the
preferences dialog will come up, just to make sure the correct
parameters have been set up. You can modify these if you wish. If
you don't want to see that window again, just say OK. You will have to
explicitly ask for for the Preferences window the next time you wish
to change anything. The preferences apply ONLY to Drop Box mode. They
are not consulted when in Manual mode.
• To show the Preferences dialog in Drop Box mode, hold down the option
key while the program is launching.
• The preferences are fairly self-explanatory. You can choose to lock or
unlock files and folders. By choosing to modify directories, you have
decided that folders themselves can be locked or unlocked. You
can modify files and folders inside those folders which you have dropped
in by checking the Modify contents box. For example, if you drop in a folder
containing three files and another folder, and have Modify contents on but
Modify directories off, and are locking the files, the folders will remain
unlocked, but all contained files (including those inside the second folder)
will be locked.
USING DROP BOXES
=================
Drop Boxes are applications which can take advantage of System 7’s Apple
Events. To use them, just drag a file over the application icon just as you
would drag a file over a folder to move it into that directory. The Drop
Box is then opened and processing is done. The program then quits. You can
also throw in whole directories and disks. You don’t have to throw in just
one, either. Select a whole bunch of files, directories, or disks, or any
combination of the three, and dump them in. The Drop Box will scan for
files of the required type and modify them accordingly. All files in all
directories within those dropped in will be modified.
You can also open the program by double-clicking and modify files from
inside the program, or you can open the program manually and then throw
files in. The program will not quit this time.
At least, that is how Rob•Drop Boxes work.
